Pilot experience in a rural area

Location and Scope

The main route selected for the study is the section between Amezketa and Abaltzisketa, as it reflects the typical challenges posed by Gipuzkoa’s rural terrain, such as steep slopes, sharp bends and variable road conditions.

Innovation and Technology

The project’s initial R&D aim is to develop a level 4* prototype in order to explore the possibility of automating some driving functions in rural areas, features that are currently not available in the vehicles used.

*An automated driving system that performs all driving tasks even if the human driver does not respond adequately to a request for intervention.

Energy and Sustainability

An electric vehicle will be used, in line with Gipuzkoa’s sustainability objectives. This type of vehicle not only contributes to reducing emissions but also optimises the use of energy resources compared to conventional vehicles.

Safety and Regulation

The autonomous vehicle will be equipped with advanced sensors and telemetry to detect obstacles in real time and ensure safe operation. Compliance with safety standards and remote control protocols, emergency assistance and operator training will be monitored to ensure an effective response to any unforeseen event.

Pilot Experience: Amezketa-Abaltzisketa Route

Enabling Phase
[
We will assess the viability of the technology in a complex environment and extract key data for future implementations. During the prototype tests, scheduled between March and August 2025, we will gather feedback from participants in order to make progress in adapting the vehicle to the needs of future users.
Pilot Phase
[
We will prepare the necessary infrastructure and conditions to conduct the initial trials for the implementation and operation with an autonomous electric vehicle, planned from mid-2026.

Learning and Replicability

After the Enabling Phase, scheduled between August and December 2025, a test will be carried out on the Zerain-Segura route, building on the lessons learned. The aim will be to gather key data in a more challenging environment for autonomous driving, contributing to the system’s development.

This approach will be repeated for each new route, making progress in adapting the service to local needs and optimising the model at each stage, with a view to ensuring its replicability at both a local and European level.
